What was the idea? Basically, that testing for diseases could be revolutionized. The military-industrial complex, in other words, was very interested in Theranos and Ms. Her start-up, Theranos, was worth billions, and its board once boasted the presence of names well-known: George Schultz, Riley Bechtel, even Henry Kissinger and General Mattis and former Senator Sam Nunn and former Secretary of Defense William Perry were on her board. Holmes was once the darling of the early morning television talk-show circuit. But for those unfamiliar with the story, a brief review is in order. Regular readers here know that I'm fascinated with the story of Elizabeth Holmes and her Silicon Valley start-up, Theranos.
